Should we join the summer study tour?

All Primary Five and Six students are invited to join the summer study tour to Cambridge for two weeks. Whether students should join the summer study tour is currently a heated debate among school management, parents and students. Some of them enjoy making new friends who come from various backgrounds whereas some of them experience loneliness. Should we join the summer study tour?

Firstly, we can understand diversified cultures through the tour. Apart from experiencing new customs and traditions, we can also learn new recipes, new ways of cooking and eating styles. Indeed, immersing ourselves in another culture is the best way to learn about the similarities and differences between people around the world. As the saying goes, "He that travels far knows much."

Secondly, we can learn to be independent. Students in Hong Kong have been criticised as being too reliant on parents. They are not able to handle problems independently. Through exposing ourselves to a new environment, we can be fuelled by the necessity to confront challenges outside our comfort zone. This allows us to further develop our self-confidence, self-esteem and resilience.

It is true to say that there is inadequacy in the summer study tour. With only a few weeks, we hardly have enough time to get acquainted with the city, the culture and the language of the country. To prepare ourselves for such a short trip, we should do some homework on language, customs and general culture of the tourist destinations before joining the summer study tour.

In my opinion, although the duration of the summer study tour is limited, it can broaden our horizons. Not only can we understand the diversified cultures, we can also learn to be independent. In short, we should join the study tour.
