The Giving Grandma
6D Erin Chan

Once there was a little girl called Grace.  Her parents died in a car accident when she was six.  She was taken care of by her disabled grandma in an old cottage in Vietnam.  Grace’s grandma worked day and night profusely as a temporary worker in a chemical plant.  Although she was incredibly exhausted, she played card games with Grace before going to sleep every night.

As time went by, Grace grew older and older.  One day, Grace asked her grandma to buy a new extravagant dress for her Christmas party.  Although Grace’s grandma was poor, she was determined to make Grace happy.  She borrowed money from her boss.  Grace was ecstatic that she would own her dream dress.  This made her grandma happy but also broke her heart because she wished she would afford without having to loan money.

A few days passed.  Grace confronted her grandma asking for more money to buy some sparkling gemstones to make the Christmas party dress more extraordinary.  However, Grandma refused.  Grace burst into tremendous tears as she pleaded with her grandma.  Eventually, she got two lavish gemstones.  One was ruby, the other was sapphire.  Grace was over the moon.

The night of the Christmas party had finally arrived.  Grace looked gorgeous in her stunning dress with the beautiful gemstones in the ball room.  As she entered the bathroom to check her make-up, she saw an old lady cleaning the toilet.  Oh! She was her dear grandma.  Grace felt great shame and had tears flowing from her face to her dress.  She asked her grandma to forgive her for her selfish acts.

In this story, the unconditional love of Grace’s grandma shows us that true giving comes from the heart without any expectation of reciprocation.  It is also true that the more we give, the more we will receive.
