Nowadays, people have different opinions on having a child with disabilities learning in a normal school. Liu Dong-mei is a girl with physical impairment and she wants to be a librarian in my school. There are different voices about this issue. Can Liu Dong-mei be a librarian?
Firstly, having studied in the same class with Liu Dong-mei, students can learn to be determined and optimistic. Although she cannot talk properly or control the muscles in her body, she practices her painting regularly and now has her own exhibitions around the world. With her mindset, she is not afraid of difficulties. I am positive that she will train up her muscle control to perform the duties of a librarian like borrowing and returning books, searching for information, keeping records of circulation, scanning the barcode labels and checking the condition of books. She tries her best to do everything. She can be a very good role model for all the students.
Secondly, Liu Dong-mei is very good at painting. She is willing to share her creative and beautiful paintings of the good books that she or other librarians have read. Those paintings can also be used to decorate the library. This can create a comfortable environment in the school library with different nature colours and also encourage readers to read more. This is a way to demonstrate positive acceptance of handicapped people to all students.
However, some of our schoolmates may disagree that Liu Dong-mei can be a librarian. It will be difficult for her to move around the library and she is unable to shelve books which returned by the library users. She will have difficulties when answering users’ questions and have problems dealing with bad-tempered library users.
To sum up, although Liu Dong-mei has her weaknesses, she also has her strengths. I believe she can overcome the difficulties and work well as a librarian. We need a good role model in our school. Every student should be given a chance to participate in school duties. We can possibly start with a trial once a week. Therefore, I think Liu Dong-mei can be a librarian.
